Learning unit contents

As opposed to the introductory course, this course requires students' active participation, as they will be asked to read various articles, and to present and discuss reading notes. The course consists of two parts. The first part is an introduction to such social sciences, in particular sociology, considered from the point of view of their contribution to historical science. The presentation of the key concepts of the main theories is illustrated by articles from historians who use these concepts in their research. As an extension of the first part, the question of categories and scales of analysis in social history will be addressed, from the approach to social classes studied in a regional framework to the different forms of event history analysis, from national comparisons to trans-national approaches. In this way, recent developments of social history will be presented. According to their affinities for one of the four great historical periods, students, divided into groups, will be invited to present the way how historians have reflected on the structuring of societies of these different periods.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to research recent historical literature on defined questions of economic and social history, to discuss them in front of an audience and finally to integrate them into their own research.

Oral exam; one (non evaluated) collective written work will be required before the exam.
