Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

All course materials (PodCast; files; forum) are available on MyUliège

Assessment subjects

The discussion on the criteria for the definition of the medieval period will be continuing until Friday 8 May. A summary table of contents will be published at the end of the course.
In the course of this reflection, in addition to questioning the traditional division of history by didactic conventions and alternative proposals for periodization, a number of transformations and adaptations of political, economic, religious and cultural practices to the realities of the time will have been envisaged, including

  • conception of power:
  • the place of the Church and the religious at the heart of any reflection on medieval civilization
  • power factors
  • legal status of persons (free/non-free)
  • personal relationships
  • institutional transformations over time
  • Economic and commercial practices: production and trade [subject to teaching by May 8].
  • Cultural richness of a period often unfairly criticized: from a linguistic and artistic point of view but also philosophical; intellectual curiosity.
Armed with the corresponding chronological, biographical and terminological reference points, the student will be able to identify these phenomena, at various stages of their establishment and transformation, and to explain them.

Assessment methods

The final evaluation will be done in writing over a period of 3 hours on a fixed date. The final evaluation will be done in writing over a period of 3 hours on a fixed date. It will consist of semi-open-ended questions and/or comments from documents seen during the course or comparable to those proposed in the accompanying exercises.
