Learning unit contents

Contents: - Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK English and US English. - Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts and styles with different content (press articles, short stories, novels...), summary, critical comment, lexical and cultural tools.  - Exercises on word definition and paraphrasing - Initiation to Anglophone culture through the texts being addressed.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the year, students will be able to: - summarise and critically comment on texts with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze) - define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs. - understand authentic recorded material - be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and culture required to understand written and spoken media (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...) -do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.
Good grasp of oral English as to understand authentic media supports

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Participating in the organisation of debates and oral exercises in class is compulsory.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

2 hours/week devoted to text analysis and audio/video content analysis on the themes discussed in class.

- Texts and exercises to be found online. - Listening exercises to be provided in class by the instructors. - Reading list for the June oral exam  to be provided at the beginning of the second term.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment in January: non exempting written exam based on a text which has not been discussed in class, in close connection with the themes covered throughout Term 1. The written task(s) will include a summary and/or open questions on the text. If passed (> or = 10/20), this exam will account for 20 % of the final grade in June.
Assessment in June: written exam based on Term 1&2 course content (course pack and video links). A listening comprehension exercise will be included on the themes discussed in class. This exam will account for 50 % of the final grade. For students having failed the January exam, the written assessment in June will account for 70 %.
Oral assessment in June : Students should individually prepare the readings assigned by the instructors. (30 % of the final grade)
