Learning unit contents
Overview of artistic productions of the 15th and 16th centuries in Western Europe: important examples, chronological relationships, contextualization. Introduction to the analysis of monuments and works, and to their interpretation from a historical perspective.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Basic knowledge of the milestones in Western European Art of the 15th and 16th centuries. Introduction to the analytical and interpretative methods of Art History. Learning of specific terminology.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
None, other than the general requirements for the study of History of Art and Archaeology and the abilities expected of a Master student in Philosophy and Letters (for foreign students: sufficient knowledge of the French language).

Lectures illustrated with overheads, to be completed with studying of Claude MIGNOT and Daniel RABREAU, Temps modernes, XVe-XVIIIe siècles, Paris, Flammarion, 1996.
Recommended or required readings
No syllabus. The table of contents, list of artists mentioned and various useful pieces of information are available on the "suppports de cours" tab. Studying will also be based on the book mentioned above.

Written examination on the subject covered in class and upon extracts of the book mentioned above.

Regarding chapters 4.2 to 6, course material for distance learning can be dowloaded from MyULg "supports de cours", as announced by emails personnally sent to each student. Students are expected to compile relevant photographic documentation.
