Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course is focused on the current development of new organizational forms (NOF) and new work arrangements (NWA) as well as on their challenges in the field of strategic HRM. It aims at supporting critical thinking on the relevance of classical theories to analyze such emerging phenomena. In a first part, students will discover by themselves a video case of NOF (Thalys) and five theories of reference. They will be invited to build an argumentation about one of these theories through its application to some elements of the case. In a second step, they will have to do a similar operation with NWA: they will have to gather relevant data on specific forms of NWA thanks to empirical papers; they will have to establish relevant links with the 5 theories of reference and assess their respective interests and limits throughout their empirical analysis.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Initiation to diagnosis of contemporary working situations and to the critical analysis of several theories of reference
This course contributes to the following Intended Learning Outcomes :

  • ILO-1 : To strengthen knowledge and understanding of management disciplines and its legal, policy and social context.
  • ILO-4 : To acquire the capacity to research autonomously and methodically the information needed to solve a complex, transversal management problem.
  • ILO-5 : Integrate autonomously researched information, tools, knowledge and context to build and propose, either individually or as part of a team, original, creative and viable solutions to concrete complex management problems, whether real or simulated, taking into account, when necessary, the human, social and legal context.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This course is based on a 'reverse pedagogy': an important involvement is expected (online learning and preparation of meetings). Theoretical knowledge is not exposed by the professor and must be acquired autonomously via the resources provided.

Recommended or required readings

The participants must access the website http://lola.hec.ulg.ac.be
They will have at their disposal the theoretical information required, the description of the missions, the agenda, and the various video sequences.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is formative and is organized in groups. It is structured in two steps : the argumentation on the relevance of one theory of reference applied to NOF, that will lead to a detailed feedback (40%); the theoretical analysis of one case of NWA through another theory of reference (60%).
