Learning unit contents

This course is divided into two parts.
The first one (20h) is dedicated to information literacy. Bibliographic resources in Earth Sciences available at the University are presented. Among these : GEOREF, Scopus, GeoScienceWorld, the discovery tool of the University libraries, ... as well as certain specific internet resources. The correct writing of bibliographical references is also taught. The topics hereafter are also dealt with : how to write and to organize a report, how to prepare an oral presentation.
The second part is dedicated to individual research work. The proposed subject is defined in close cooperation with the professors of Geology Bachelor and Master degrees. A list with the proposals is given to students.
Each student has to write a report presenting a literature review and the interpretation of the obtained results. An audio-visual presentation of his/her work in front of the class is organised.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Teaching students to develop information literacy skills on a specific topic.
- Learning about scientific research.
- Teaching students to write down a written report of their research findings, and to communicate their results orally.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Having a good background in Earth Sciences.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

As the first part of the course was completed before the COVID-19 pandemic, no distance learning courses were held.
The second part of the course, dedicated to the completion of a personal research project in the laboratory, could not be continued. Since each student was at different stages of data acquisition and new data could not be acquired, it was decided that this part of the work would not be continued and that the results already acquired would be presented in an appendix to the report and not in the body of the report as initially planned.
A review session will be organized by videoconference.

Assessment subjects

The report gathering the results of the literature search will be evaluated.

Assessment methods

Remote oral examination by videoconference.
