Learning unit contents

This Doctoral Seminar plays a central role in the program of the Doctoral School in Management Science co-sponsored by ULiège, ULB & UMons.
It aims to initiate a young doctoral student starting his or her PhD thesis to the fundamentals of scientific research in management science.
It is focused on the research object chosen by the student, on its research theme and on the research protocol specific for each student considered individually.
It implies the design, the production and the defence of 4 work packages (WPs) successively :
- WP1 is dedicated to the writing of a short memo (8 pages) that describes the main concept at the core of the research project of each student, based on a scientific literature review specific to the research theme of each student. This memo is then presented and discussed during a pitch (5 slides & 5 minutes long) and discussed in a critical perspective by the other students participating to the Doctoral Seminar.
- WP2 is dedicated to an in-depth critical and scientifically structured analysis of the content of 8 recent scientific papers published in high-rank peer-reviewed journals. The focus is put on the identification and presentation of the dominating scientific theories in the field of research of each student. Again, a memo (10 pages) is written and defended during a public scientific presentation limited to 10 minutes and 10 slides.
- WP3 is dedicated to an in-depth and structured analysis of the methodology, the research protocol, the data and the data analysis techniques that are used in 8 scientific papers published in high-rank peer-reviewed journals strongly linked to the field of research of each student. At the end of this analysis, a memo (5 pages) is written, with a proposal of a specific methodology deducted from this analysis and applied to the research theme of each student. The generalization of this research protocol  and the representativeness of the underlying phenomenon are explicitly considered.
- At least, WP4 is dedicated to the design and the writing of a first scientific contribution strongly linked to the research theme of each student and able to be presented in a short delay during a Scientific Congress accreditated by the EIASM in the field of research of the student. This paper is limited to 5 000 words, excluding bibliography.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Beyond the ILOs expected from any student in management science, the focus is specifically put on the following ILOs :
- Ability to analyse in a criticial perspective the scientific literature and to identify meaningful contributions considering the project of each student
- Ability to identify the most traditional research protocols in the field of research of each student
- Ability to design a research protocol adapted to the research questions specific for each student.
- Ability to mobilize the concepts of generalization and of transposability of results.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To be admitted to the PhD Program in Management Science in one of the Universities participating to the EDT ULiège - ULB - UMons

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Five formal steps are included in the learning process of this course :
- Official start of the course and presentation of its detailed content : October, 18, from 14.00 to 17.00
- WP1 : Presentation & discussion (pitch) : December, 6, from 13.00 to 17.00
- WP2 : Presentation & discussion (extended pitch) : February, 21, from 13.00 to 17.00
- WP3 : Submission (Extended XMind file and research protocol) : April, 21
- WP4 : Submission of the full WP before June, 15 for a jury's deliberation in June and no later than August, 20 for a deliberation in September.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
