Learning unit contents

This course is an introduction in participative management. His goal is to give an outline of the various levels of participation and a critical analysis of this practice.

3. Participation in tropical natural ecosystems

 4. Participation in temperate natural or semi-natural ecosystems 4.1. Citizen-based approachs 4.2. Rivers contracts 4.3. Collectives approchs in urban management

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Starting with lectures by experts in natural ecosystems management, films of reviewing articles that express opposite opinions, and field excursions, management methods based on participation are presented to the students. After completing the course the student is expected to propose methods that reconcile social, ecological and economic aspect for a participatory sustainable management of tropical and temperate ecosystems.He will be also capable to developp critical mind about participation and to give the level of participation in study cases.

Prérequis :
General course from bach : Biosphère, agriculture, society; Sociology; Forest and forest ecosystems; Equipe, organisation et changement; General ecology.

Passive learning : lectures

Active learning : Working group, question and answer session
Works in groups linked with "atelier-projet".
Field excursion: interactive excursion : The students are responsible for the contents of the excursion

Recommended or required readings

During the course, different publications in french or english are distributed among the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination (100%) Questions of different nature (multiple choice, restitution, conception...)
The course is independent of any teaching unit and must be successful for itself.
Depending on the number of successes, the second session provides either an identical evaluation or work on a case study

Assessment methods

The assessment will be based on a homework assignment. This will include a case study (scientific publication on participation in the broad sense) to be find, read and understood, then analysed according to a grid of questions provided by the teacher. Learners can refer to the course to answer the different questions. The evaluation will be based on the quality of the answers and the understanding of the questions asked, which implies a prior understanding of the course. The work will be sent by email (cvermeulen@uliege.be) to the course holder no later than the day of the exam. The file sent will be named name_firstname_examenGP2020.
