Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course covers various aspects of didactics of culture in a class of French as a foreign language (FLE).
We begin with a general reflection on the concept of culture, in order to distinguish this concept from certain related concepts (e.g., civilization) ; then the course concentrates on issues and conditions related to the « didactization » of culture in a class of French as a foreign language ; next, in the framework of some thematic sequences, we will examine some very concrete approaches that are related to the French (more particularly francophone) culture of Belgium.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Participants should be able to consider in a critical fashion the problematics linked to the didactics of culture. Participants should learn about the practical elements necessary for preparing the content of a course based on one or more aspects of French or Belgian culture in the framework of a class in French as a foreign language.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Participants should possess a minimum level of knowledge and/or experience concerning the didactics of French as a foreign language

They should be familiar with certain basic elements of French and Belgian culture (historical familiarity, literary familiarity, etc.)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

After having attended several lecture classes and some conferences of external invited speakers, students will be asked to work in small groups, and to produce for the whole class an exposition in which they will present a didactic sequence linked to some aspect of Belgian culture. These presentations will be discussed and evaluated in class so that we may discuss their pedagogical qualities, ways of making things better, and things that may need to be included.
