Learning unit contents
Designed as a seminar where students are actively involved, the course includes lessons aimed at helping students to understand and decrypt a major, cross-cutting topical theme. In 2019-2020, the course will deal with the world of lobbies.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students should be able to cast a critical eye on the literature associated with a recurring topical problem, which they may have to deal with in the future as a professional journalist. Students should also be able to successfully carry out desk research and synthesise it in the form of an oral presentation, supported by a written text.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Students should have an active interest in the news and regularly consult the written press, online press and radio and TV news.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
During the first part of the course, students will receive an in-depth analysis and the context to the problem in question, thus providing them with the tools required for their future research, and allowing them to reveal the subtleties of every facet of the studied theme. In 2019-2020, the presentations proposed by the teachers and their doctoral students will be devoted to lobbies.
Secondly, students will work in groups to put together a presentation to present in class. This piece of work will be closely supervised by the supervisors who will correct and clarify the students' analyses, discuss and rework the working hypotheses of their research, etc., during class.
Students are given a certain freedom to choose their subject which must, however, be examined from various angles and be supported by a good number of scientific resources.

Recommended reading
Reading recommendations will be given throughout the students' research work, taking into account the specificities of their subject. These scientific references are available online or in the library.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course involves a two-part assessment: firstly, the students (in groups of three) must orally present the results of their research accompanied by a written summary; secondly, the teaching staff will correct the final version of the work, which should have been modified according to the remarks made by the teaching staff and doctoral students during the oral presentation.
The final version of the work, to be handed in at the beginning of the May-June exam session 2020, will be considered as part of the exam.
