Learning unit contents

The course describes the history of the institutionalisation process of Information and Communication Sciences in the United States and France, by focusing on a few of the main original movements associated with ICS (political economy of communication industries, cultural studiessociology of communications professionals, etc.). One part of the course will be dedicated to the introduction to documentary research in the area of ICS (research methodology, selective biography, presentation of the main scientific journals and available databases, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course has several objectives: to present the history of Information and Communication Sciences in the United States and France; introduce some of the main original movements associated with ICS (political economy of communication industries, cultural studiessociology of communications professionals, etc.) and the main bibliographical references linked to them; to initiate students in the basic principles of documentary research. As regards the last point, reference journals and databases in the field of ICS will be presented and located during the course; the criteria allowing students to assess the level of reliability of a documentary source will be explained; there will also be an introduction to the Philosophy, Information and Communication section of the Bibliothèque Alpha, its publications and databases.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Within the framework of this course, students will be put into small groups to participate in a compulsory introductory seminar to documentary research. Organised as three-hour modules, these sessions will be led by a scientific member of staff from the Philosophy, Information and Communication section (Bibliothèque Alpha: K. Jacquet). Please note that students are obliged to attend these work sessions. The dates of these sessions will be announced at the beginning of March 2020 on infocom.ulg.ac.be
