Learning unit contents

The Master seminar on contemporary documentary cinema adresses each year a specific topic in the field of the analysis of documentary cinema. Alternating lectures and student presentations, this year's edition will exclusively focus on possible links between Critical theory (of the Frankfurt School and its indrect heirs in the field of media studies) and political documentary (militant or socially critical audiovisuel works). The works of following artists and essayists will be approached a.o.: Alexander Kluge, Harun Farocki, Chris Marker, T.W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Oskar Negt and Hans Magnus Enzensberger.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this seminar, students will be able to develop a precise, in-depth and personal analysis of a documentary object by crossing it with theoretical texts issued in other fields than film studies (philosophy, sociology, media studies).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students must have followed earlier courses in the field of history and the theory of documentary cinema (cf. "Cinéma et vidéo documentaires").

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Readings, screenings, seminar discussions, and oral presentations.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

face-to-face

Recommended or required readings

A reader will be available via MyULg (required readings).

Assessment methods and criteria

Students are requested to carry out an individual oral presentation (two last sessions of the course). This 45 minutes long presentation will develop a personal, in-depth and rigorous analysis of a documentary film by crossing it with a theoretical text contained in the reader. In line with the participative nature of the seminar, each presentation will be followed by a discussion with all the participants. A written version of this presentation will be the basis of the final assessment.
