- The bioreactors and associated sensors (direct and indirect)
- Growth dynamic of cellular population
- Type of culture : batch, fed-batch, continuous
- Down-stream process
- Drying techniques
- Case report : Optimization of the biomass growth and of the metabolites production
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Allow the student to understand the growth curves of microorganisms and metabolite production at industrial level and from an economical perspective
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Microbiology
- Enzymology
- Cellular and molecular biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
- Lectures
- Illustration of theoretical concepts by industrial application
- Suppervised personal work
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The lectures are developped according to the general overview. They include a visit of the CWBI pilot plant (fermentors and downstream).
The supervised personal work could be performed face-to-face or distance-learning according the students request

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
The courses are given remotely via LifeSize using the course notes available on eCampus (power point files) and according to the schedule included in CelCAT. The teacher communicates to the students the content that will be covered in the next course. Students are invited to browse the corresponding course notes. During LifeSize sessions, the teacher details the course subjects and answers students' questions, which can be sent by email (pfickers@uliege.be) beforehand. LifeSize connection settings are communicated to students by email.
Assessment subjects
The content for the evaluation (examination) corresponds to that included in the power point files available on eCampus (namely the chapters on Strains and expression systems, Reactors and sensors, Population dynamics, Culture in bio-reactor, Post-fermentation processes, Drying techniques).
Assessment methods
The assessment will be written. Students will have access to the course notes (power point files) or other documents. Students will receive the exam questionnaire by email according to the schedule defined in CelCAT. A student representative must communicate to the teacher the list of each student's preferred email address before the last lesson. On the day of the exam, students will confirm by return email to pfickers@uliege.be that the exam questionnaire has been received. They will then have a defined time to answer the exam questionnaire. Two options are possible; either the student responds on white paper in handwriting by writing legibly and using black ink, or he uses a word processor. Before the time runs out, students must send their response by e-mail to the teacher (pfickers@uliege.be) either as a word file or as a photo file of the JPEG, TIFF or PDF type (photo of the exam copy taken with a mobile phone for example) of their handwritten answer. The names of the course and the student must be mentioned in the subject line of the email. The teacher will confirm by return e-mail that the exam copy has been received.
