Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course on Molecular biology will allow to the students to discover the basic mechanisms that gover gene expression and regulation

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Allow an understanding of DNA replication, gene transcription, translation and targeting of cellular proteins. This course will also allow to the students to understand important differences between pro- and eukaryotes. On some occasion, we will discover how pharmacological agents can influence gene expression.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Pré-requis: Biologie 2
Co-requis: General Biochemistry

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

No praticals

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

face-to-Face

Recommended or required readings

Text books are Genes X by B. Lewin (Ed. Jones & Bartlett, USA) and Molecular Biology of the gene by James Watson et al. (Ed. Pearson Education). A CDRom with all the figures shown during the course will be distributed at the first lesson.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written examination

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The course material is available at MyUliege as:
- PDF files corresponding to the totality of the slides used in each Chapter (Chapters I to VII).
- Podcasts corresponding to the ex-cathedra classes that were taught until the 10/03/2020, before the confinement and covering Chapters I to V (except for the classes that were not recorded due to technical issues with the Unicast system).
- Videos corresponding to Chapters VI and VII.

Assessment subjects

The evalution will focus on the entire material covered by Chapters I to VII.

Assessment methods

The examination will be held at the end of the academic year, around May/June. Due the extraordinary circumstances, the evaluation will be done "on-line" as theoretical questions or exercises related to the course material. Question format will be MCQ or SAQ.
