Learning unit contents

The course will include: - A practical introduction to UNIX commands, the use an X terminal and the management of file transfers using the network - The use of different softwares for comparing two nucleotide or peptide sequences as well as a description of the different banks accessible via the internet. Particular attention will be given to the statistical analysis of the results. - The programs present in the EMBOSS software suite ( http://emboss.open-bio.org/rel/dev/apps/) will be used to analyze the nucleotide and peptide sequences. - Practical work associated with this module will enable students to use the software presented in theory.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of the course is the acquisition of skills by students for using bioinformatics tools to analyze peptide or nucleotide sequence.

A good knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology

Alternation between theoretical and practical courses in a room with computers at the disposal of students.

The examination will consist in solving a practical problem and an oral presentation to the class. Students will work in groups of two.
