Learning unit contents

after a brief overview of the major moments of the political and socioeconomic history of modern China (19th and first half of the 20th century), the course will focus on the politcal and social transformations of the Mao era (1949-1978). Teh course will be devided in four parts: early reforms; the One hundred flowers campaign; the Great leap forward; the Cultural revolution.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The main aim of this course is to improve students' knowledge of the major sociopolitical events of modern and conteporary China and to allow students to better understand sociopolitical processes at play in China today.

None.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The students are expected to prepare each session with a series of readings. After the lecture by the professor a discussion will take place between students during each of the teaching sessions.
Regular attendance required.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face teaching.
Each class will be based on preparatory assigned readings.

In addition to the assigned readings, other documents will be made available to the students via the ecampus page of the course.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

This course combines assignments (readings of scientific texts) with online classes. Power point presentations are commented by the teacher during online classes.
Students are encouraged to interact with the teacher during online sessions.

Assessment subjects

The contents for this year's exam are limited to those contents that have been discussed in classes and during online sessions. This year's contents will not go further than the Boxer Rebellion.
 
The text Thireau, I., Hua, L., Les ruses de la démocratie, Paris: Seuil, 2010, pp. 179-212 shall not be part of the contents to be assessed this year.

Assessment methods

Students will deliver a written paper (from 3 to 5 pages) based on resources used in this course (assigned readings, documentaries, additional readings, etc.). It aims at assessing student's skills in synthetizing, reformulating and analyzing contents. Details on the modalities of this paper will be provided by the professor to students.
