Learning unit contents
This unit consists in an introduction to the key moments and processes running from the first Opium wars (1839) to the downfal of the Qing Dinasty. The emphasis is being put on the political and social dimensions of this period.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This unit aims at making students familiar with the major issues and topics of a key period of Chinese history. We will endeavor to study this period by focusing on how some of the major stakes of the time, in particular "the quest for wealth and power" (fuqiang) enable to better apprehend recent historical developments, in society and a the level of state formation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Compulsory readings will precede each teching session. In addition to the class taught by the professor, discussions on the topics of each session will be organized. Active participation by the students will be sought after.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Preparatory reading in addition to ex cathedra classes.

Compulsory readings will be made available to students.

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
This course combines assignments (readings of scientific texts) with online classes. Power point presentations are commented by the teacher during online classes. Students are encouraged to interact with the teacher during online sessions.
Assessment subjects
The contents for this year's exam are limited to those contents that have been discussed in classes. This year's contents will not go further than the Boxer Rebellion.
The hereafter texts and related contents will not be included into contents subject to exams this year.

Assessment methods
Written exam. Students will be allowed to draw on assigned readings as well as notes for this exam.
The exam will assess student's skills at synthesizing, analysing and developing arguments. It will consist in a dissertation based on an open question provided to the students on the day of the exam.
