Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course teaches the design and evaluation of an urban atmosphere in its quantitative and qualitative aspects. The theoretical course is illustrated by various examples of real urban developments.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course objectives are :

- Understanding issues related to the design of high quality urban atmosphere.
- Knowing the quantitative and qualitative criteria that influence pedestrians' comfort in public spaces.
- Learning to assess planned or built urban environments in terms of their atmosphere, integrating people comfort and environmental performance of built areas.
- Exploring tools for modeling urban environments and the energy performance of neighborhoods and buildings.
- Developing an expertise in enegy simulations software by using two of them (at the scale of the neighborhood and the scale of the building)
- Acquiring adaptation and self-learning skills in relation to computer tools, thanks to the energy simulations developed
- Developing critical thinking in relation to numerical simulations (choice of the best software, choice of the best model, choice of the best parameters, critical analysis of results, ...).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching is based on theoretical courses, accompanied by a design studio at the neighborhood level. Learning the usage of simulations software at the scale of the neighborhood and the scale of its buildings, while developing an analytical and a critical point of view about these software and the results obtained. The project will also focus on the development of high-quality public spaces.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Courses from September to December, on Thursday from 14h to 18h.

Recommended or required readings

The slides accompanying the oral presentation are available in pdf format.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students work is assessed on basis of their numerical simulations and a written work that analyses them.
