Learning unit contents
This course will provide a general basis for students to understand urban and architectural form. Students will learn to read a natural, cultural or urban site (town, village, etc.), a part of a town, an island, a plot of land, constructed and non-constructed space and their interactions (relationships between different scales), their changes (over time) as well as their components. This will enable them to position their architectural work in a larger context.
Theory classes alternate with the practical application of analytical and reflective methods. Various urban situations mentioned above will be assessed. Through this exercise, students will also demonstrate their ability to position themselves. Exercises are proposed in the form of workshops, practical case studies and essays.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
A course PowerPoint is available on the Uliege e-campus website. This is provided with voice lessons. Several examples of projects also illustrate the course.
A powerpoint illustrates the 5 exercises to be performed by group.
On the e-campus, exercises and analyzes can be uploaded. During the digital workshops (via Lifesize), it is possible to discuss the 5 exercises / analyzes.
Assessment subjects
Evaluation based on a digital report (min A3 format) representing the 5 exercises/analyzes, clearly presented:
Exercise 1. Visual analysis (in plan and in elevation)
Exercise 2. Morphological analysis of the city (1. observe the city-shape, 2. draw its structure, 3. explain the structure using its history and the characteristics of the site (relief, watercourse, geology, .. )
Exercise 3. Analysis of the different fabrics of the districts. It is important to be able to recognize different types of urbanization: medieval urbanization, 19th-century urbanization (Hausmann type), 20th-century urbanization (CIAM type, garden city, etc.), contemporary urbanization, a type of urbanization derived from the site (relief, watercourse, geology, etc.) => show during the workshops different urbanization with the 4 districts you have chosen. Make sure to zoom out enough on the quarters so that their structures are recognizable.
Exercise 4. Analysis of the divisions of the soil (the plot) and of the different islets - in each district, you analyze an island. Exercise 5. Analysis of the built typology - in each district you show the architecture that most characterizes that district.
Assessment methods
The evaluation takes place on the basis of a Digital report min. A3 format - to be introduced on June 2 before 4 p.m. on the e-campus.
