Learning unit contents
The course comprises three parts:1.
1. an overview of architectural history basics, from the greco-roman antiquity until the end of the nineteeth century, addressing the following issues (2h/week):
- history of architecture as discipline;
- the architect through history;
- the orders;
- history of the city;
- the christian church from Constantine to Viollet-le-Duc;
- domestic architecture;
- "heritage" through time;
2. lessons on specialised vocabulary, including self-assessment tests (1h max./week)
3. specialised lectures and readings putting the students in contact with some contemporary challenges of the research in histoy of architecture (max 1 h/week).
At the same time, the students work in groups on an exercise that is taken into consideration for the final result.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims at acquiring a good understanding of the important historical trends in architecture and at acquiring a specific and precise vocabulary.
It constitutes a first contact with research in the field of architectural history.

written exam and exercise
Test on vocabulary are organised in the course of the year; a waiver test on vocabulary takes place during one of the last lessons.

The June exam (Block 1 students only) is replaced by an assignment. Given the very small number of students concerned, individual contact will be made with each one in order to define the modalities of this exercise.

Assessment methods
As far as the written work is concerned, students who fail this part of the grade improve their personal contribution to the work (zoom in on a part of the building being studied).
As far as the examination is concerned, it is replaced by a work based on the course notes, for which precise instructions will be given.
