Learning unit contents
Students write and present an essay on a current development issue. While working on their essay, they attend a series of lessons on the anthropology of development. After this introduction, students take turns to present their essay orally in class.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of the course is to give students tools to critically analyze development interventions. Students will have to write an essay that is both synthetic and grounded in the scientific literature on the subject that they chose.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
To have a basic training in the social sciences. To want to reflect critically on development discourses and practices.

The course will be in seminar form.

A selection of subjects for wring the essays, with a list of compulsory readings are posted on MyULiège at the beginning of the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
Grading will depend on the final essay and an a written exam.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
Students receive comments from the teacher on a draft of their group essays to allow them to improve it before submitting the final version. These comments are made remotely first by email and then orally if students request it.

Students are assessed on their group essays and on the introductory lessons to the course by the teacher.
Assessment methods
The final version of the group essays is sent to the teacher by email at the start of the exam session. The knowledge and understanding of the introductory lessons to the course are assessed individually through a remote oral examination.
