Learning unit contents
Ethnographic practice, which originally developed during the great discoveries and subsequently during the European colonial era, became institutionalised in the 20th century. It has undergone many new developments in recent decades, especially in Western societies. Mainly based on the practice of participant observation, the collection of spontaneous conversations and informal interviews, fieldwork can only be understood in the light of the history of anthropology (from pre-ethnology to the present day), its developments and the controversies it has aroused and continues to arouse today. The course aims to outline the contours of an epistemological framework of ethnographic practice. It will be based on the critical examination of texts and conferences, and on the methodological and epistemological questions that will support individual experimentation, based on practical exercises and a short piece of ethnographic fieldwork.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Students will have acquired critical knowledge of past and contemporary debates and controversies regarding ethnographic practice both inside and outside the discipline. Students will also have been familiarised with the requirements and practicalities of personal methodological and epistemological exploration through practical exercises and a short piece of ethnographic fieldwork.
