Learning unit contents
Scientific English II
This English course continues the language training of Veterinary students by focussing on the oral understanding of veterinary information.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
The objective of this theoretical and practical training is to help students read scientific information in a critical way and be prepared for the Evidence-based Medicine approach, which will be developed in master.
Acquired knowledge and skills will prove useful during university education and professional career.
Integration activities
This activity is organized along two major axes:
- the organization of the working group
- the work organization of the group
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Scientific English II
The objectives of the English course are twofold:
- develop the understanding of scientific information presented orally, and
- reinforce the students' knowledge of the vocabulary of veterinary English through various listening comprehension and note-taking exercises.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
This training will enable students to carry out literacy information research.
It involves a two-pronged approach:
- a theoretical part, in amphitheater, which will enable students (i) to identify the different types of scientific papers, (ii) understand the notion of biased rendering of information, and (iii) skim resources to select the most appropriate data,
- a practical part, given in small groups, which will enable students (i) to acquire the necessary independence to select relevant resources in order to solve a given problem, (ii) to read a scientific paper and assess its quality (method, bias, etc.) using an assessment grid.
Integration activities
The objective of this activity is to provide students with practical tools and theoretical benchmarks to work as a group in a pleasant and supportive climate for the work to be done, with an adequate organization, and to achieve a quality work
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Scientific English II
Thorough knowledge of the veterinary vocabulary and scientific English features seen in the first two veterinary English courses.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
A good knowledge of the document literacy information search processes and tools (VETE2104 course) are necessary.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Scientific English II
Listening comprehension exercises to be done individually following a course schedule given in the presentation session of the course.
There is no automatic entitlement to exemption.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
Four theoretical hours followed by four hours of practical exercises. The course starts in the second quarter (February 2019). It is organized so as to encourage students' active participation.
There is no automatic entitlement to exemption.
Integration activities
Work in small groups on the same day.
This activity is based on "experiential learning". It consists of alternating phases of group work and moments of reflection and analysis of these experiences. The phases consist in listening exercises, problem solving, decision-making, negotiation, creativity and project management.
The links between these learnings and their applications in student and professional life will be discussed.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Scientific English II
The English Listening Practice module of the course consists of a theoretical introduction, graded listening comprehension exercises on eCampus, and an exam that will verify the students' ability to take notes during a short lecture and answer precise questions on the topic of the lecture.
In the course of the year there will be four compulsory listening comprehension tests on eCampus and four in-class tests with corrections and additional explanations aimed at helping the students test and improve their ability to understand specialised information given orally.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature

Scientific English II
- The course videos, notes and calendar are on e-Campus.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
Course notes (powerpoint slideshows used during the theoretical course) are available on eCampus.
The reference books listed in the course notes are library resources at the disposal of all students.
Assessment methods and criteria
The marks obtained for the different modules of VETE2109 will be merged in a single grade out of 20, with English accounting for 60%. There is no mark for the integration module, but all the module assignments must have been done for the global grade based on the other module to be calculated. Attendance at the integration module classes is compulsory.
The global grade for VETE2109 is a weighted mean of the marks obtained in the two modules of the course, except if one of the two module marks is equal to or smaller than 8.00/20. In this case, it is that fail mark (of 8 or less) that will be used as global grade for the course VETE2109.
In the September (resit) session, the students have to resit only the modules for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.00/20. They cannot resit module(s) they have already passed.
Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.00 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.
Scientific English II
The marks obtained for the different modules of VETE2109 will be merged in a single grade out of 20, with English accounting for 50%.
The students' ability to accurately understand veterinary information given orally will be assessed through a compulsory listening comprehension and note-taking test. The students will be asked to listen to a 15-minute veterinary talk and answer MCT questions and a few short-answer open questions based on the notes they have taken.
The English module is assessed twice in January (50% of the module grade) and in June (50% of the module grade). There's only one listening comprehension in the resit.
In September, the students have to resit only the modules for which they did not obtain marks equal to or greater than 10.00/20.
Partial exemptions (based on pass grades of 10.00 or more in one or more modules) will be carried over from one academic year to the next.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
Assessment takes place in June 2019 together with the English examination. The exam is a written exam consisting of theoretical questions and exercises in the form of extended matching questions.
Integration activities
A certificate of attendance is assigned at the end of the day of activities.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
Scientific English II
In-class exercises and tutorials and self-assessment online tests taken at home.
Critical appraisal of scientific literature
The tutorials will take place in groups of 20 to 25 students in order to encourage debate and discussion. They require individual preparation beforehand. The exercises to prepare will be sent in due course.
Integration activities
The activity is carried out in collaboration with the SPGO, service of Social Psychology of Groups and Organizations, in their premises
