Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course of general histology of domestic animals aims at describing the various healthy tissues of the animal organism. These tisssues are integrated in organs ensuring the great functions of the organism.
General and particular connective tissues, muscular, nervous tissues, blood and lymph vessels and blood cells will be approached during Q2. Their structural, ultrastructural and functional characteristics will be approached.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Theoretic course:
To know
The objective of the theoretic course is to teach the students the morphological and functional features of the different epithelial tissues.
To make
Starting from a pure descriptive approach the student will have to be able to establish a relationship between the examined morphology and the function of the cell, the tissue and mainly the organ being studied.
To be
The opportunity of observing virtual histological preparations on eCampus offer the possibility to the students to work in groups, exchange different point of view, acquire critical spirit, and stimulate mutual aid.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The co-and prerequisite teaching untis are detailed in the courses program
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
During the practical course sessions, histological preparations of the different organs are put at the students disposal so that they can examine the cellular morphology, and the structure of the different tissus mentionned above
Students must attend practice classes.
Any absence or delay must be justified before the beginning of the practical work session by phone (04/366.40.81-82 et 85) or by sending an email to an assistant (vtoppets@uliege.be, axel.dubois@uliege.be).
Any unjustified absence or delay will be sanctioned. Misted sessions must be caught up during a further session after which, the student will be evaluated by an assistant. If the competency of the student is not sufficient, he will be penalized one point off his final grade. It's the same for the late student.
The student might be unauthorized to present the examination of practical course if more than one unjustified absence occur
The sessions start with Power point presentations enabling them to synthesize the structures they had to recognize.
For other sessions, capsules videos will be put on the on-line course. These videos explain remind the necessary theoretical notions for the understanding of the session of practical class.
Then the students work on their own on the basis of the practical work syllabus as well as the other didactic aids at their disposal (histology books, virtual histological preparations). If necessary they can ask assistant lecturers or graduate assistants for help to carry out their processes.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face to face
Recommended or required readings
A syllabus of the theoretic course, a textbook for the practical work and an atlas of histology on paper are available at the "Office des cours".
PDF are available in the ad hoc repertoire of e-campus.
A histology atlas on CD-Rom realized on the basis of the preparations analyzed throughout the year is also available at the same office. This atlas can be easily installed on the student's personal computer or on the computers of the multimedia room.

Assessment methods and criteria
Short written tests online, in the form of QCM, QROC.... will be organized during the academic year. One test will be dedicated to the epithelium. Written tests (3) is worth 20% of the final Q2 mark. Two tests will be organized. A test dedicated to general and particular connective tissues and a second test dedicated to muscular, nervous tissues and blood and lymph vessels will be realized.
During the school year, an interactive CD-Rom QUIZZ will enable them to get familiar with the questions of the practical work exam of the end of the school year. The only purpose is to allow the students to evaluate their method of working and to know the requirement level they will have to reach. These exercises will never be marked in any way.
The theorical exam, consist on written test in form of QCM, QROC, QROL and illustrations to be annotated. It will be worth 40% of the final mark .
The practical work exam is an oral exam. The student will have to recognize cells, tissues and vessels on preparations which may or may not have been examined during Q2 . It will be worth 40% of the final mark.
The student will have to be able to establish a connection between his/her practical and theoretical knowledge. Being only able to recognize tissues is not satisfactory enough to pass. The student will have to prove that he/she can deal with his/her subject with sense and structure.
The practical work exam is worth 40% of the final mark.
