Learning unit contents

Translation of general interest texts with different levels of language, different registers and in a variety of domains. Approach to the cultural references encountered in the texts. Notions of contrastive linguistics. Introduction to the translation methods and processes. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will be able to translate general interest texts, i.e. analyse them and transmit and reformulate the meaning. They will be able to use basic translation tools (monolingual and bilingual dictionaries) and take into account the specificities of the source and target languages.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good functional knowledge of the English language. Very good command of the French language.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Written preparation of the translations at home. Comparison and critical group correction of the work prepared individually.
- Mandatory study of several chapters of English vocabulary from the English vocabulary book (see required readings)

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Two-hour lessons per week during the first Semester. Compulsory classes.

Assessment methods and criteria

- Written exam in January in two parts:
1. Exam on the vocabulary from Robert et Nathan (see required readings) AND on grammar translation exercices similar to those done in class. 
 2. Translation of a text (no bilingual dictionary allowed). 
The second part of the exam will be taken into consideration (i.e. marked) if and only if the first part has been passed (minimum 10/20).
