Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course first of all presents the justice actors and functioning of the Belgian judicial institution.  Further to this introduction, the students are initiated to elements of legal reasoning. Insights into a sociology of justice progressively lead on to developing a sociology of law and questioning the place and social uses of law in current society as well as the legitimity of the judicial system in order to solve conflicts.
Following these critical approaches, the course presents alternatives and/or tools for developing mediation approaches.  The prospective mediators are then encouraged to adopt a reflecting attitutde towards their practice. Within a sociological perspective of mediation they are getting acquainted with sociological tools for analysing social and individual behaviours.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
  - present the judicial actors and the functioning of the Belgian judicial institution
  - discuss the place and social uses of law and mediation in today's society
