Learning unit contents

"Specialists in orthophony/speech therapy treat problems involving language and communication. (...). In order to be called competent in all the most basic aspects of this specialisation, the orthophonist must really be a master of local language and possess a high level of expertise regarding the most complex and technical aspects of treatment of linguistic problems, knowledge of the complexity of this field and its procedures, which in some respects go above and beyond that which is expected of other professionals." (Commentary by the CPLOL about the opinion expressed by the section for employment, social relations and citizenship[SOC/113] in regard to the European Parliament and European Council's directive on recognition of professional qualifications COM(2002) 119 final-2002/0061 (COD)-2002))
Mastery of the French language is included in these basic skills for professional practice in speech therapy. This course has two main objectives: 1) Understanding the importance of written French in speech therapy studies and for eventual professional practice;  2) Doing remedial work if necessary in spelling, vocabulary and grammar.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Upon completion of the course, students should have reached a level of mastery of their language that is sufficient so that they will be able to treat patients in speech therapy.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is based on the principle of self-teaching and face-to-face instruction.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

At the first semester, five classes (11/10, 25/10, 08/11, 06/12, 20/12) are required from 4 to 6 PM. There will be an informational class meeting at the beginning of the year (20 sept from 17h to 18h PM) on thursday. 
At the second semester, the classes are organized on thursday from 13h to 15h and they concerned written skills (to be confirmed).

Assessment methods and criteria

Four-part written examination: - a series of questions to demonstrate mastery of the French language (vocabulary and syntax) in the form of a QCM ; - an exercise for error detection ; - a dictation ; - a written production
Students must pass every one of the four parts of the exam. There are no partial exemptions or dispensations (except for the written production).       The steps for passing the examination to earn a dispensation (January), the examination in the first session (May/June) and in the second session (August) are the same. At the examination, students must present a student ID card from ULg and an ID card.
