Learning unit contents

Adult psychiatry

Psychiatry is a medical speciality that focuses on the biopsychosocial study of the aetiology, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders, which occur alone or combined with other disorders of medical or surgical origin.
Medical psychology studies the psychological and social aspects of the practice of medicine within the framework of the human relations doctors establish with their patients, colleagues, associates, medical institutions and society.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Adult psychiatry

In a continuum that is coherent in all the stages of the training, this course applies the CanMEDS reference framework, which outlines an ideal portrait of the doctor, their know-how, skills, technical aptitudes and attitudes at the end of the training.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Detect the signs and symptoms of common mental disorders
- Communicate respectfully with patients, without stigmatising them
- Apply a model of the medical interview that integrates communication with the clinical approach
- For each disorder: 1) be familiar with the epidemiological data; 2) apply the steps of the diagnosis by incorporating the decision-making algorithms, semiology and differential diagnosis; 3) argue the therapeutic possibilities by integrating the etiopathogenic mechanisms
- Detect the factors concerning the risk, prevention and screening of mental disorders
- Detect situations where there is a risk of suicide, argue the principles of prevention and care
- Recognise, diagnose, assess the impact of an addiction and argue the therapeutic attitude

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Adult psychiatry

This list is indicated in the overall course programme for Master in Medicine.
Good knowledge of the notions of medical psychology taught during the bachelor's degree, physiology and pharmacology are required for an optimum approach to the course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Adult psychiatry

This course is mainly taught through lectures, presented in modular form and accompanied by discussions, educational video clips and a link with society. With the aim of favouring the active appropriation of knowledge, an online course is associated with the lectures and is available on eCampus. The subject is intentionally fragmented into short segments to favour its integration.
To illustrate and complete the notions studied during the medical psychology classes, practical workshops are organised in the form of role playing. Attendance in the laboratory is compulsory. All absences must be justified by a medical note.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Adult psychiatry

Online classes are available via MyULg, on eCampus.
Here, you will find all the documents presented in the face-to-face classes integrated into a learning roadmap (slide shows, educational video clips, psychiatry medical observation guide, etc.) and a toolbox including all the recommended reading.
Optional practical work to be done on your own is also available.

Recommended or required readings

Adult psychiatry

The reference work for the course, the "Référentiel de Psychiatre", is available online for free on eCampus, in the toolbox section. Here, you will also find decision-making algorithms, a psychiatry medical observation guide and a link to a free illustrated semiology application (AESP).

Assessment methods and criteria

Adult psychiatry

Students must have their ULg student card with them and their ID card to enter all the exams, otherwise they may be refused access and the exam won't be taken into account.
