Learning unit contents

Higher Education Pedagogy (HEP) is a pretty young research field in Belgium. Nevertheless, it comprizes already numerous publications, specialized seminars and a very important reflective activity.
The students, already aware of the challenges faced by HE teachers (cf QAPES-partim1 course), will discover, through this course, the specific function of "Developer" (D) in Higher Education.
This course offers participants :

  • to discover the reality of developers through reading and participating in  activities and seminars/webinars ;
  • to deepen one of the developers' missions by documenting it (reference book, web sites, testimonies) as well as participating in synchronous and asynchronous online discussions ;
  • (in small groups) to scientifically contribute to the field of HEP by producing a short video and commentaries on a professional web site linked to the chosen developers' mission as well as by moderating a professional webinar.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Through this course, the students discover the new domain of the role of developers in higher education. The course will more specifically focus on the development of competence 1 of the reference grid used in the Master in Educational Sciences at FPLSE, slightly modified (by the lecturer) as follows :
"To analyse education and training situations :

  • referring to conceptual frameworks from the interdisciplinary field of the educational sciences (models, existing litterature) ;
  • taking into account the contexts and different actors of those situations (age, life and training contexts, functionning of the systems, meaning for each of the actors)."
The situations will of course concern the developers. The participants will therefore simultaneously develop the foollowing competence, described by the PENSERA (2015) network : "Join a professional development process within and serving the community of developers in Higher Education".

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The QAPES-partim1 course is a co-requisite for the participants who don't have any experience as teachers or developers in higher education.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The students will work in small groups, although the first steps of their work will remain individual. They will read several chapters of a reference manual, interview a developer, realize a video/powtoon presentation and interact online following several modalities.
In order for them to deepen the topic they have chosen, students will read and document their ideas (articles, conference proceedings, books, professional testimonials, online sites) and participate in internal seminars (online if they wish).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Blended mode, combining face-to-face, external and on-line activities. If they wish, the students who choose this course as a "free" option (those who have not enrolled in the Master in Educational Sciences of ULiège) can go for a fully online modality.

Recommended or required readings

A specific book will be proposed, but deepenings will depend upon the chosen subjects.

Assessment methods and criteria

Participation in the training activities is mandatory in order to access evaluation for this course.
The development of the targeted competences (it italic upper) will be evaluated through a written production.
