Learning unit contents
After a contextualization of the question of notation in the general framework of musical theory, the course will be devoted to the invention of musical notation in the West, and in particular to its different stages from the Carolingian era to the end of the Renaissance.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Main figures of theorists, schools of notation and musical conceptions: the West in the light of its antique, Latin and Greek roots.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Foundations of the current theory of music. Ability to "read" music. A minimum of historical knowledge.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Seminar. Each course includes a lecture section and a part of tutorials, case studies on historical documents.
