Learning unit contents
The course is taught in English.
Level 2 is an introduction to specialty English. We will use simplified or non-simplified authentic source-documents.
The studied topics are linked to the students' field of study. Here are some examples: Global Warming, Natural Ecosystems, Forestry and Soils, Food issues, etc.
The second development trajectory ('Rédiger en anglais un document adapté au public visé sur un sujet complexe') of the professional situation 4.2.3 ("Utiliser diverses méthodes de communication avec la communauté des bioingénieurs et la société au sens large") will be developed and assessed (certifiying assessment) during this course.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, the student will reach the Level B2 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as far as:
-writing a summary (scientific conference)
-writing an application letter
-listening and reading skills
are concerned.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The student has to have a B1+ level (cf. CEFR) before starting the course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Each topic includes many different activities such as:
a. summarizing source-documents (mainly oral)
b. reading and listening comprehension
c. grammar and specialty vocabulary exercises.
The student has to make 2 oral presentations about study-related topics.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course includes face-to-face teaching, self-learning activities (e-campus) and group work.

We strongly recommend that Level 2 students get the following reference book:
MURPHY, Essential Grammar in Use. English Edition with Answers and CD Rom (ISBN 978 05 21 67 54 37)
Assessment methods and criteria
The final Level 2 grade (in June) will be calculated as follows:
January exam (gram/voc, reading & writing an application letter): 20%
Continuous assessment: 25%
June written exam: 55% including
-Listening 10%
-Vocabulary and Grammar 15%
-Summarizing a conference 30% (2nd traject. of the prof. situation 4.2.3)
In August the final grade will be calculated as follows:
Reading: 20%
Listening: 20%
Grammar and Vocabulary: 20%
Summarizing a conference: 40%
Exemptions, even partial, will not be granted. Students with 'crédits résiduels' have the exact same grade as the other students and will not be granted any exemption.
The student who fails the certificative assessment (2nd traject. of the prof. situation 4.2.3) will have a failing grade for this course.
The student who signs one part of the exam will be given 0/20 as a final grade.

Organizational remarks
A precise description of the course organization will be presented to the students during the first course. (Introductory Documents).
The students with "crédits résiduels" for this course
1/ will be invited to a compulsory meeting at the beginning of the year: several specific tools will be presented.
2/ who prioritize other teaching activities will have to postpone the exam to the following session/year.
In other words, the Master students whose Bachelor program includes this English course should give it priority over their Master courses. For practical reasons and to ensure fairness, the exam will not be postponed or organized in any other form. If you cannot attend the exam on the scheduled date, it will be postponed until the year after.
