Topics : General  and Organic Chemistry

  • Chemical kinetics
  • Thermochemistry and thermodynamics
  • Nomenclature in organic chemistry
  • Isomery and stereoisomerism
  • Reactions in organic chemistry

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Acquire the basic tools of chemistry.
  • Check the reasoning ability, the learning and the understanding of the topics (this aim is crucial for all the lessons of the cursus).
  • The lecture is oriented, as much as possible, towards the applications to life sciences.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of some backgrounds of chemistry of the secondary level.
  • Having completed the Partim I (CHIM0710-1) is highly recommended.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • 2 experimental sessions of 4h are programmed to enable the students to apply and sense by themselves the practical involvements of the theoretical lectures.
  • These "laboratories" consist in a kinetic study and in the characterization of organic functions of different molecules.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Theoretical lecture: 20h divided into lessons of 1h40 (~1 lesson per week). 
Training session: 4 sessions of 1h30 are schedulled for this course. 
e-learning: an e-learning platform is available for helping the students all along the course. You will find there: 


  • lecture notes
  • statements of the training exercises
  • corrected exercises 
  • mock exams
  • a discussion forum for asking questions to teachers

Recommended or required readings

Lecture Notes. Students will have access to the slides showed during the lessons via their e-learning interface. They will be, of course, invited to complete them according to their wishes.
Reference book. Two books of reference will be presented. A low price sale will be held at the beginning of the new academic year for the students who want to purchase these books.

Assessment methods and criteria

SESSIONS OF EXAMINATION
Written exam  (80% of the final score).

  • The students will be evaluated through a written exam organized as multiple choice questions.
  • Two sessions of examination will be organized (may-june and september), allowing the students to have two chances of success.
  • This written exam will count for 80% of the final mark.
Experimental examination (20% of the final score).
  • The experimental work in chemistry laboratories will be taken into account by averaging the three marks obtained in each experimental session (~15pts for QROC and QROL exams, and 5pts for general behavior, for the respect of the security instructions...).
  • The presence in the laboratory sessions is mandatory. A non-medically justified absence will be automatically sanctionned by a 00/20. All the medical certificates must be EXCLUSIVELY deposited in the mail box located at the first floor of the B6d building. Only these certificates will be taken into account.
  • This mark is fixed for the three exam sessions and counts for 20% of the final score. 
VALIDATION OF THE COURSE CHIM0711-A.
  • The global score will be calculated from the score obtained for the written exam (80%) and from the experimental work (20%).
  • Each global score equal or superior to 10,00/20 will ensure the validation of the course.
  • The global score is sent to the Secretary of the jury for deliberation with two digits.
