Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course focuses on the biology of planktonic organisms as they are at the basis of most aquatic ecosystems and are of paramount importance for the global production of ecosystems.
On the basis of an extended knowledge of the organisms' biology the different types of trophic chains and their functioning will be detailed.
Water quality asessment and management will also be considered:
1. The European framework directive will be explained and the practical aspects will be presented.
2. Case studies of hydrobiological research and the management of freshwater populations and problems related to them will be analyzed.
3.Cyanobacteria and algae toxins problems into surface waters will be approached.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of this course is to train students to infer from hydrobiologial field data the nature and management of anthropogenic interferences with aquatic ecosystems inlcluding by using tools described in the Water Framework Directive.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
a good knowledge of aquatic ecology and biodiversity.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes lectures by the teachers, a seminar by an invited expert and the students will analyse and present case studies of limnological problems and their management.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings
Besides the documents that will be handed during the ccourses, three reference books can be consulted in case of need:
- Limnology, R.G. Wetzel
- Limnoecology, W. Lampert & U. Sommer
- Limnologie générale, R. Pourriot & M. Meybeck
Assessment methods and criteria
There is an oral examination. It can be asked to the students to present a lecture on a particular subject of the course followed by a discussion/question session.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The time table of the course is determined by the students and the professors.
