Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Lectures and workshops are compulsory and must be attended either during the first or second year of specialized master according to the geographical location of their internship. They can develop through this cursus their basic knowledge in microbiology and also their critical interpretation of results.
Course in clinical parasitology and mycology (M.P. Hayette)
The course will include presentation of parasitological and mycological infections and also clinical cases. The programme e-MEDICIN image can be used as support from clinical cases and real cases from the lab will be also included. The students will have also to do a presentation on a topic of their choice.
Table of contents
Part I. General content.
Mycology: generalities on fungi: structure, host-fungus interaction, prevention and treatment.
Parasitology: generalities on blood and intestinal parasites, host-parasite relationship, prevention and treatment.
Part II. Biological diagnosis.
Invasive and superficial diagnosis: candidosis, cryptococcosis, aspergillosis, pneumocystosis, dermatophytosis.
Blood parasite infections: malaria, toxoplasmosis, filariosis, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis.
Intestinal parasitosis: helminthiasis, amibiasis, giardiasis.
Course and workshops of clinical microbiology (P.Melin)
Seminars on hematology
Hematology is the study of cellular and molecular elements of the blood. The course is dedicated to the physiopathology of hematological illnesses and the laboratory tests used for their diagnosis.
Seminars on medicamentous toxicology
Specific cursus on chromatographic methods in a clinical, forensic and environmental toxicology department.
The students will stay for a 2 - 3 monthes in the lab and participate to technical validations, protocol signatures, etc....
Biostatistics II
This course is the second part of the teaching of Biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine. It addresses more advanced statistical methods, such as one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), contingency tables, non-parametric statistical techniques and survival analysis.
Each lesson consists of a theoretical exposition of the method followed by a session of practical applications with SAS software, where the student will get used to solve statistical problems encountered in daily practice.

Multivariate statistical analysis
The course is a general introduction to the explicative methods used in multivariate analysis, i.e. the study of several variables simultaneously. The course will cover the following chapters:
- R introduction
- Multiple regression
- Binary and ordinal logistic regression
- Survival curves and Cox regression
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Parasitology-Mycology
- To know the main characteristics of fungi and parasites
- To know all the diagnostic methods for the diagnostic of invasive and superficial fungal or parasitological infections.
- To develop their debating skills and knowledge to synthesize the literature on a given topic.
At the end of the course, the future specialist will be able to:
- determine what is a useful clinical result.
- explain the expected benefit of microbiological analysis in the clinical management of a patient or for setting public health precautions.
- argue the importance to reducing TAT whenever it is possible
- argue about and justify preanalytical conditions specific to microbiological analysis.
- explain the limits of microbiological diagnostic analysis.
- propose appropriate diagnostic analysis per type of pathogen/infection.
- encourage and set dynamic communication with clinicians
- present the different methods used as diagnostic tools in clinical microbiology according to a syndromic approach
- sustain a discussion about the different antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods
- interpret the results of a basic menu of serological tests
- perform a basic menu of microbiological analysis
Seminars on hematology
1. physiology of hematopoiesis and normal blood cells
2. pathology of red blod cells
3. pathology of white blood cells
4. pathology of platelets
5. hemostasis and coagulation
Biostatistics II
The course is intended to improve and enhance the use of biostatistics in health sciences, by insisting on statistical reasoning and problem solving rather than on the mathematics and the complexity of formula. Students should be able to carry out an in-depth statistical analysis of a dataset resulting from an experiment or a survey, in particular with respect to the thesis they will prepare later on in their cursus.
Multivariate statistical analysis
The course is an introduction to the methods of multivariate data analysis. At the end of the course, the student should have the ability of defining a multivariate problem, analysing the data and interpreting the results. He/she should also be able to understand the use of multivariate methods in the scientific literature.

- The Cumitech series provides consensus recommendations regarding the judicious use of clinical microbiology and immunology laboratories and their role in patient care. Each Cumitech is written by a team of clinicians, laboratorians, and other interested stakeholders to provide a broad overview of various aspects of infectious disease testing. These aspects include a discussion of relevant clinical considerations; collection, transport, processing and interpretive guidelines; the clinical utility of culture-based and non-culture-based methods and emerging technologies; They are edited and published by the ASM.
