Learning unit contents
The course aims to introduce students to bibliographic and documentary research, and to academic writing.
In relation with the five pillars of mastering scientific information that compose ULiège's system of reference, the course deals with the different stages of documentary research and presents the different search engines and databases. The various presentation rules for bibliographic references and the bibliographic management software programs are explained. Plagiarism, the risks it involves and how to avoid it are also dealt with.
These various subjects are studied in line with an annual theme.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to elaborate and compile documentary research:
- recognise and identify different types of sources used for research in architecture;
- plan the research of sources (books, articles, images, maps, etc.) using the catalogues available in documentation centres (archives, libraries, etc.);
- acquire significant autonomy in the use of documentary resources;
- apply the methodological advice given (note-taking, structuring, synthesis, distinction between opinion and critical thinking);
- critical reading of research work;
- write a text on an architectural subject or issue;
- quote the sources;
- avoid plagiarism.
