Learning unit contents
The 'dynamics of the forms' workshop is an experimental laboratory of form and force, the aim of which is to stimulate questioning about construction and creation. Through exercises students will reflect upon their work, integrating both constraints and invention, intuition and reflection, errors and solutions, the individual and the group.
The workshop will last a whole week. Students will create a piece of work, generally (but not exclusively) in three dimensions, on a given theme. They will complete all stages of the work, from conception through to realisation, finally installing the work in space where appropriate. They will thus learn to bridge the gap between an idea and its practical realisation, to master both technical constraints and deadlines. The piece of work must have both meaning and establish a relationship with a location.
Discussions, even individualised ones, will be relevant to the whole group. All students, even those in groups of two or three people, will build their own approach on the basis of discussions with the teaching staff, but also incorporating various propositions emerging from other participants or teams.
Depending on the theme and exercise in question, students will be directed to other fields such as sculpture, cinema, theatre, photography, nature, etc. This openness to artistic disciplines will also include a presentation from an invited artist.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of the workshop is to exercise the ability to take into account a series of precise constraints in order to develop a coherent proposition, incorporating time constraints - the workshop extends over five working days - as a means of stimulating creation. This concentrated piece of work calls upon the coordinated use of a wide range of skills to manage all aspects of a project: the relevance of practical solutions in comparison with the original intentions, economy, handling, assembling and disassembling, organising a team, etc. These aspects contribute to the development of a creative response to a given question.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This workshop builds upon the 'Ecritures de l'espace' courses in Bac 1 and Bac 2, as well as upon those from the 'architecture project' workshop: it requires the ability to read space, to compose, to assemble and to articulate.
It is also open to other fields such as sculpture, painting, music, dance, etc. and builds upon general knowledge and student's other interests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This is a workshop based on action and permanent dialogue with the workshop leaders, both teaching staff and guests (with specific backgrounds depending on the subject: visual artists, choreographers, video artists, etc.).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face to face. All students are required to attend the workshop. Discussions will focus not only on each individual's and each team's progress, but also to the diversity of propositions within the group.
Please note that the test in the second exam session (except for special and justified cases) is based on research begun during the workshop.
Recommended or required readings
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment is continuous on the one hand - taking into account students' attitude to work, the relevance of trials and errors, coherence and reflection -, and on the other hand based on the final piece of work, which will be assessed by a jury consisting of teaching staff and invited guests.
