The study of architecture in the 20th century: Part 1 (1900-1939)
- Introduction
- Changes in the 18th and 19th centuries
- Art nouveau
- The precursors to the modern movement
- Russian avant garde
- The Chicago School
- The prairie houses
- Expressionist trends
- The modern movement
- The international style
- Art deco and the pre-war period

The period under study extends from the end of the 19th century through to the events of 1939.
The approach falls within a field which compares artistic expression with architectural productions.
The course aims to provide knowledge of the major stages in the evolution of architecture in the 20th century.
The objective is to show how architects have thought about space through their various productions (writing, drawings, constructions).
The course constitutes a foundation of knowledge which is necessarily useful for implementation of an architectural project in the workshop.
The course syllabus, a portfolio of texts and material relating to the classes themselves will form an integral part of the material given.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To develop the ability to critically reflect through a comparative reading of publications.
Based on architectural productions from the period in question, study the implementation of specific questions.
Learn to chronologically and analogically read architectural productions in the 20th century.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Curiosity and interest in artistic and architectural expression of the 20th century and particularly the question of their representation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures with supporting digital material which completes the syllabus.
Critical analysis of documents given in preparatory analysis of the class itself.

Assessment methods and criteria

Mid-term: a comprehension test.
At the end of the period:
- retain knowledge: understand projects, authors and the context in which they are produced
- use of information acquired, establishing relationships between different modes of expression, different trends
- the appropriation of knowledge
