Learning unit contents

Students will learn how to examine French and English conjointly and determine what the parallels and differences between the two languages are at various levels. 
Particular attention will be paid to the contrastive use of syntax, lexicon and morphology. Students will also learn how to identify and master the procedures facilitating the process of translation from English into French.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will have gained insight into matters related to contrastive analysis, in particular:
  syntax
punctuation
lexicon
morphology
verb forms and tenses
use of articles and prepositions
translational operations (notions of equivalence, transposition, (de)nominalisation, modulation, etc.)

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of English and French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course combines theoretical sessions with practicals (in class and at home). Students will have to read the recaps (.pdf files of my Powerpoint presentations) and do their assignements as we go along.

A written exam with theoretical and practical questions.
