Learning unit contents

This field trip objectives are to illustrate various notions seen during previous lessons on taxonomy, phylogeny, functional morphology, and ecology of organisms, applied to a marine intertidal zone. The trip is thus not related to another course, but constitutes an integrated overview.
The stay is held at the "Station de Biologie Marine (SBM)", Roscoff (Finistère, Brittany). The Station belongs to the University of Paris VI (as the ones of Banyuls or Villefranche-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean), and shelters more than 200 scientists from French and European institutions. Developed research themes run from genomics to marine organisms' ecology. Activities organised during the stay will allow to be in contact with these sientists.
During the stay, students have the opportunity to observe and collect in situ organisms from different biotopes (sand, mud, rocks, seagrass meadows, estuary), organisms that they can keep living and study in the lab. Beside morphological and systematic aspects, various ecological approaches are made, or on the field or as experiments in laboratory. Finally, special activities are scheduled (onboard cruise to collect plankton and sediments, visit of a fish sale auction) to illustrate biotopes not directly accessible "by foot". Lessons are also given to complete the knowledge about some biological groups of importance in the intertidal zone

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of this field trip is to integrate different notions approached in several theoretical lessons (morphology, phylogeny, ecology) to a peculiar biotope: the intertidal zone of the Brittany coast.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To have fulfilled the 180 ECTS of the Bachelor degree.
To have followed the courses related to the field trip, i.e. ecology, taxonomy & phylogeny, morphology, courses given during the same year of Master, or during the previous years (during Bachelor degree).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Field trip

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This field trip of course implies the presence of students on the field. Online connection not yet available in the Brittany intertidal zone !

Recommended or required readings

A good knowledge of the theoretical aspects seen during the 1st quadrimester is required. Needed additional literature will be provided during the field course.
A special folder (with all the informations and activities related) will be distributed before the trip. Ppt slides of lessons given during the trip will be available during the stay in Brittany.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is made during the last day of the stay, and comprises three parts:
- an individual questioning about 10 organisms collected and collectioned during the stage
- a multiple choise exam (20 questions) dealing with the various aspects approached during the stage
- a presentation (poxerpoint-type) by groups of 3 students about a biological taxon well-represented in the tidal zone (including ecological, taxonomic,... aspects) There is thus no document to be supplied at the end of the stay.
Important remark: The students must be physically present. There is no possibility to perform another work instead of the stage.

Work placement(s)

this lesson IS a field trip !

Organizational remarks

The field trip, this academic year, will take place from April 13 to 23, 2018 (11 days -2 days for travel).
Students will stay at the 'Station Biologique de Roscoff' (rooms for 1 or 2 p), very close to the labs where practicals will be done.
Meals will be served either at the Station (supper), or as picnic (diner) when on the field.
The transport of  field material will be organised by ULg Professors.
The transport of students is no more organised by ULg. They have to organise by themselves the trip (by train, car, bicycle...) from Liège to Roscoff, in order to be present at the begining of the stage.
Fees of about 160€ will be asked to every participant. They actually include all the food and lodging costs (reduced by the University fees).
Extra informations will be given in due time. And can be obtained via the organisers.
