Learning unit contents
The seminar in political sociology develops each year a specific theme about evolution of political values and behaviour.
The book is selected each year according to the number of students who attend. It will be a book in English, that utilizes statistical methods in order to analyse a question of political sociology.
The seminar will select some key chapters. The number of chapters will depend on the number of student following the course, since the seminar is based on students presentation (see downwards).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Through the discussion of the specific theme of the year, the goal of the course will be to increase following skills :
- reading a theoretical text in english
- detect how an argumentation is articulated
- realize a synthesis of the argumentation
- realize a pedagogical document presenting this synthesis
- make a pedagogically accessible presentation of this synthesis for other students (in french)
- keep a critical stance towards well-established theories or famous scientists.
Discussion will take place in FRENCH but student who prefer to present in English will be allowed to.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Being able to read sociological literature in english. Being able to read and interpret simple statistical tables and figures of moderate complexity..
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is a seminar around a book that will be read in common
- all students are supposed to prepare a part of the book and to present it (in group) in front of the class in order to foster a collective discussion
- the teacher will be involved in the preparation of each chapter with the students.
Seminar will be co-animated by prof. Marc Jacquemain, Dr Fred Claisse and Patrick Italiano, expert in methodology
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Students are supposed to read a part of a book and to prepare a lecture on their reading. The teacher or an assistant helps preparing the lecture.

The course will be based on the analysis of a specific book (see above).
ONE COPY OF THE SELECTED CHAPTERS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DO NOT WANT TO BUY THE BOOK
Assessment methods and criteria
The final note will be attributed to the students according to their presentation and participation for the seminar. There is thus no formal examination.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE TO THE SEMINAR IS MANDATORY
PARTICIPATION TO GENERAL DISCUSSION WILL BE A CRITERION OF EVALUATION
