Organisation and examination
All year long, with partial in January
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Introduction to research in mathematics through the study of a (portion of a) mathematical article / book chapter published in English.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course the student will have worked alone to understand the manuscript. His/her understanding of the results will be sufficient for the student to present them in a convincing way during a 40 minute oral presentation without notes on the blackboard.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
MATH0257-2 - Analyse II, 2e partie
MATH0482-3 - Probability and statistics II
MATH0248-1 - Géométrie II
MATH0246-2 - Algèbre II
LANG0077-1 - Anglais I (anglais)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
A list of topics (each containing a bibliographic reference as well as a short description) will be made available at the beginning of the academic year. Each topic will be presented by a promoter.
The mathematical difficulty of the topics will be taylored so as to ensure that 3d year students of the bachelors in maths at ULg will be able to read them. A topic can either be devoted to an entire article / book chapter or only to a portion that the promoter believes to be of sufficient interest.
The student must give by mail to the coordinator (yswan@ulg.ac.be) a ranking by order of preference of three articles with three different promoters for October 27 2017 at 23:59 at the latest.
Topics will be asigned by order of arrival (according to the time of email reception). The final attribution of topics will be decided by the coordinator of the course and the promoter of the topic.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
MATH2012-1 is taught in coordination with the course LANG0082-1 (English).
Students are expected to work on their own but two resources are available :
- Students are encouraged to make regular appointments with their promoters in order to discuss mathematical difficulties
- Help sessions will be organized within the English course (LANG0082-1) in order to help cross the language barrier.
Recommended or required readings
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation of the students achievements will be based on an oral presentation in French or in English. The presentation will last exactly 40 minutes. It will be performed without notes on a blackboard in front of the coordinator and the promoter.
The final grade will be attributed in equal parts by the coordinator (who measures the relative quality of the presentation) and the promoter (who judges the individual scientific quality).
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The article used within MATH2012-1 will also serve for the exam of the course LANG0082-1. Precise information on this aspect will be given in due time by the person responsible for the latter course.
