Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In this course we will study the birth and evolution of Spanish literary realism, from the novela cortesana and its moral tracts to the novels of Pío Baroja and Camilo José Cela. We will have the opportunity to discover the novelties and progression in the 'realist' esthetics, as well as the creation of social types and the redefinition of the mimesis upon which it is founded.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the term, students should be able to:

  • construct a developed and correct written discourse in Spanish.
  • produce a written argument in a justified and ordered manner.
  • produce complex ideas on Spanish literary texts.
  • identify a whole series of literary figures and narrative strategies.
By the end of the term, students should know:
  • the stages and particularities of various realist schools in Spanish literature.
  • certain specific terms in Spanish literary history (genres or trends).
  • some key details which allow them to interpret and develop the required readings.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Level B2 of spoken and written Spanish. Ideally, students will have a general knowledge of the eras of literature and of contemporary Spanish history, as well as basic skills for narratological analysis. It would be desirable to have previously followed the course on 'History of Spanish literature' (LLR), 'Introduction to the history of Spanish literature' (LLM) or 'Études de textes littéraires espagnols' (LLM).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students must write an essays during the term, on a complementary piece of reading, taken from the syllabus. Students will also have to sit a written exam at the end of the term. Each piece of reading is accompanied by a series of questions which the students should think about before the corresponding class. Film versions of some readings will be shown outside the compulsory classes.
