Learning unit contents

In-class course (37.5 hours) The course is entitled "Level D English for students in Psychology and Speech Therapy [Partim 2]" and includes the following: - reading comprehension of authentic research papers in the field of psychology; - speaking and communication activities: oral presentations, debates, discussions, etc.; - further study of subject-specific vocabulary; - listening comprehension activities based on authentic audio and video recordings; - developing a better understanding of the characteristics of academic writing; - studying grammatical nuances in written speech for a more profound understanding of texts and successful production of text.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Perfecting the four language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking, in the domain of psychology. By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to:
. understand extended speech, even when links are only implied and not signalled explicitly;
. understand long and complex literary and factual texts and specialized articles;
. express themselves fluently and spontaneously, without obvious searching for expressions;
. use language flexibly and effectively;
. formulate ideas and opinions with precision;
. present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects (definition, illustration, paraphrase...).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of the course corresponds to the European level C1. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree (from Remédiation to Level C) or a suitable equivalent.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

This course uses a dynamic and interactive approach to learning English for specific purposes and is targeted directly at students studying for a Master's degree in Psychology and Speech therapy.
The methods and activities used will involve:
. the transmission of grammar and vocabulary through language practice and adapted exercises;
. using correct grammar and vocabulary in the writing of short texts and definitions;
. analysing authentic articles;
. listening activites based on authentic sources;
. oral presentations based on authentic sources;
. subject-specific discussions and debates in class.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Weekly 3 hour classes, taught in groups of about 30 students, through the second semester of the academic year.
Students are required to read the texts at home and prepare the exercises from the study book on a weekly basis.

Assessment methods and criteria

1. Oral presentation in class - 4/20
Oral presentation in class to be given in small groups. The subject of the presentation is chosen by the students and submitted to the teacher for approval.
2. Written exam - 8/20
Reading comprehension questions based on an unseen text: processing data (true/false, MCQ, etc.), language questions, short explanations of key terms and phrases, etc.;
Language questions (grammar and vocabulary in context) based on the texts seen over the year. 3. Listening comprehension - 2/20
Open and MCQ questions on an unseen audio/video file.
4. Oral exam - 6/20 EITHER a presentation of the student's final dissertation OR a presentation of an article chosen by the student and submitted to the teacher for approval.
