Learning unit contents

Oral and written activities based on texts, articles and videos dealing with psychology. Students will be required to participate actively in the class, which implies reading the texts before coming to class.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Improving the four language skills, namely reading, listening, speaking and writing. - Enhancing students' ability to cope with specialised English texts. - Allowing students to speak about various topics related to psychology through organised discussions.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The level of this course corresponds to the European level B2-C1. Students will thus need to have a good basic knowledge of English and a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the B-level course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course was designed to help students:
-broaden their domain-specific vocabulary (in relation to the topic of asylums); -improve their reading skills through the FASP  (Edgar Allan Poe's short story on the debate about asylums in the 19th century); -enhance their listening skills by watching excerpts from the film based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story (Stonehearst Asylum, 2014); -work on their writing skills (comments).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in May or August (20/20)
Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text. Writing exercises (students will be asked to comment on quotations, and/or to express their opinion on one of the given topics from the film and short story).
