Adaptability:

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This course is not a beginners'course. Students should have a good basic knowledge (secondary/ high school level or ALTE level 1 or Council of Europe level A2)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is divided into two main parts: a review of the grammar on the one hand (with the syllabus English level 1), and an introduction to business vocabulary on the other hand (with the Market Leader).
The exercises are integrated in the course and do not make up a separate course. They include grammar exercises, listening and reading comprehension as well as communication activities based on Market Leader. The course requires active participation on the students' part, notably during in-class debates and case studies organised in groups.
The student will also have to study a part of the basic vocabulary from "Le Bled", on which he will be interrogated at the mid-term tests as well as at the January and June exams.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course is taught 3 hours a week (2+1). The in-class course is taught to groups of about 50 students. The students will be divided according to their level of English; a placement test will be organised on Monday 18 September in class.
Students are required to prepare every week the grammar exercises and the activities from the Market Leader. They also have to review the basic vocabulary from "Le Bled".
Office hour every week.

Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark is calculated on the basis of the following tests:
-
Written exam in January (25%): grammar, vocabulary, Bled and reading comprehension of an unseen text . The listening comprehension will take place on 11 December 2017.
- Written exam in June (35%): grammar, vocabulary, Bled, essay and listening comprehension. The latter will be held 7 May 2018.
-
Oral exam during the 2nd semester (20%): Business meeting: simulation in groups of 6 students of a meeting in business English based on a Case Study given to the students 1h before their exam. This will take place on Saturdays 24 March and 21 April 2018.
-
Mid-term tests (10%): 2 tests (6 November 2017 and19 March 2018) on the vocabulary and the grammar of each unit as well as some units of the Bled.
- In-class case studies (10%): 3 simulations of business meetings held in class and marked individually. If the student is absent for these 3 case studies he/she will not be allowed to take part in the business meeting and will have to take an individual oral exam in the session of June.
- Re-sit: written exam (70%) and oral (30%) exam on all the subjects covered during the year.
A full 10/20 means that we will not round any mark between 9 and 9.99 up to 10, but down to 9 (so, even if the student gets 9.98/20 this note will be considered as 9/20). This rule will be applied in two cases: for the final mark in June, and in September, should the student have to re-take his/her exam in August.
