Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The is taught is wholly in Spanish and focuses on two main topics:
1) the various aspects of the economic environment in general and, particularly, of the business world in the Hispanic countries;
2) issues and news concerning the Hispanic countries (Latin Americ and Spain).
The students are put in new situations in which they are to apply their terminological, syntactic and cultural knowledge and so get to use business Spanish while learning the lexicon relating to topics such as business travel, credit and insurance, negotiating, marketing etc. as well as everyday topics.
In addition, they will be expected to make presentations in class (dealing with various topical news about the Hispanic world), and as preparations of the field trip scheduled in 2018-19 (Master 2, advanced level).  This will offer them the opportunity to meet native speakers and representatives of the economic, political and cultural sphere.
The course also allows for grammar revisions, whether on the students' request or the teacher's initiative on the basis of mistakes found in written and oral work.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Reaching C1 level in all skills by the end of the year. The narrow difference betwen the objectives of Bac 3 advanced level and Master 1 advanced level takes account of the reduced number of classes and the absence of Spanish practice in Q1.
By the end of the course, the students will have to understand the basic content of the complex texts, including techincal discussion in their area of expertise; communicate satisfactorily with native speakers on a wide range of topics and argue effectively.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Passing the B3 course taught at HEC or otherwise reaching B2+ level (ERF).
Having a command of Spanish grammar as a whole, a good knowledge of everyday vocabulary (about 5000 words) and of the most frequently used business terminology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course focuses on verbal interactions and on knowledge sharing.  For their oral presentations, the students will be left the choice of a topic as long as this relates to the Hispanic world. Business vocabulary learning will be based on real life current documents and issues of the business world. Grammar revision will be based on the students' output and on an individual work project.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

In-person teaching (20 hours) and individual homework

Recommended or required readings

  • course reader available from Centrale des Cours in early Feb.
  • Documents relating to listening comprehension available on Lol@ (Feb 2018).
  • Oral presentations file (Mai 2018): PPT presentations, press articles, Internet links

Assessment methods and criteria

The final score is calculated on the basis of the four following aspects:

  • individual oral presentations
  • listening comprehension (test scheduled out of the session):transcriptions and fill-exercices based on audio extracts from press articles and native speakers' conversations on topical business news (dealt with in class), and general comprehension or transcription exercices based on one (unknown) audio extract.
  • writing (June session): a composition on a business issue
  • speaking (June session): conversation on all topics dealt with in class, including the presentations

A score of attendance for part of the exam or absence for part of the exam automatically entails a score of attendance for the course as a whole.
