Learning unit contents
This course continues the development of understanding written scientific English (as started in the Medical English Course (Levels One & Two). It also focuses on the students' ability to paraphrase, translate, synthesize and analyze scientific papers and articles in English .
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The purpose of this course is to allow students to demonstrate their thorough comprehension of unabridged papers from medical and scientific journals by providing paraphrases and/or translations of some excerpts.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
MedEng 2 (Medical English -2nd part, in 2nd year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 6 or Cambridge Advanced English A- C).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course is comprised of:
- a theoretical introduction (5 hours) taught to all students together,
- workshops (25 hours in all) in which the students, divided in groups of about 10, will read, paraphrase and translate scientific papers. These workshops will be taught by researchers from the Faculty of Medicine.
Recommended or required readings
The written notes of the theoretical introduction to the course are available online.
The scientific articles will be handed out in each workshop.
Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam in June.
