Learning unit contents
This course is designed to meet the specific needs of future translators and intepreters.
- Reading comprehension of a variety of texts (newspaper articles, short stories, novels, book chapters, etc.). Students will also be expected to summarize, criticize, close-read and dissert on any of the texts or topics viewed in class, with special attention to lexical, grammatical and cultural elements.
- Special consideration will be given to the broad Anglo-Saxon culture.
- Listening comprehension exercises based on authentic audiovisual materials.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the year, students will be able to
- summarize and make critical comments on texts seen in class and any imposed reading materials, both orally and in writing;
- define words and phrases, and paraphrase paragraphs from the various texts discussed in class;
- understand authentic audiovisual materials;
- master the English vocabulary and culture necessary for the comprehension of texts, and audio and video files;
- carry out meaningful individual research in order to fully understand the cultural references from texts and listening comprehensions.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Very good knowledge of the English language. Fluency in speech.
Very good listening comprehension skills.
Critical mind and intellectual curiosity, as well as thoroughness in the interpretation of texts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Taking part in classroom discussions and oral exercises is mandatory. The collective work accomplished in class is as relevant to students' learning process as their personal research and peparation of the textual and audiovisual materials.

For the January exam, the novel A Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (1985).
For the June exam , a portfolio of texts TBD and a collection of short stories: Let's Tell this Story Properly: An Anthology of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Ed. Ellah Wakatama Allfrey. Toronto: Dundurn, 2015.
Assessment methods and criteria
January
Written exam (15%):
On the novel A Handmaid's Tale and on one or several unknown texts related to topics seen in class up to December.
Note: With a grade of 10/20 or more, students are exempted from retaking this part of the exam in June.
June
