Learning unit contents
In the age of dematerialized music, the status of music is paradoxically less intangible than ever. It is now understood that art and money can go hand in hand, which is amply demonstrated by the reference to the arts as an "economic engine" of a region by the public authorities as well as their inclusion in the curriculum of some business schools. We will quickly consider the history of this difficult relationship, starting with the opening of the first paying public theatres in Venice in the 17th century. We will then look at the contemporary situation in more detail. Taking examples from the world of classical music as well as popular music, we will look at the issues of financing shows, the professions of music mediation, the role of public authorities and private entrepreneurs in financing concerts, following a path that will go from artists to consumers.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The learning outcomes are:
- to make people aware of the music professions
- to be able to assess the stakes involved in financing culture, not only in financial terms but also in moral terms.
- to give students an initial glimpse into the functioning of an art world in which some of them will be brought to work.
