Teaching in the second semester

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course consists in the development of case studies relevant to pollution problems and management in aquatic ecosystems exposed to micropolutants. The case studies seen are chosen considering the students' particular interests when they wish to.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of the course is to develop the students' abilities to analyse and present envionmental problems related to the pollution by toxic chemicals of aquatic ecosystems.
The integration of the case studies discussed in the management procedures in the EU and the formulation of management solutions are also developped in the course.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Notions of ecotoxicology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will include:
- lectures on: Biomarkers and confounding factors in ecotoxicology by Dr. Gismondi
- a seminar on surveilance network including those using ecotoxicological tools in surface waters of Wallonia by Dr. Marneffe (ISSeP), invited expert;
- the preparation and presentation by the students of the analysis of a pollution problem in aquatic ecosystems.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The aim and goals of the course are presented during the first teaching session. Students then chose the case study they will analyse and present to the other students. Students will report regularly to the teachers the progress of their work and will have opportunities to discuss their subject and how to present it.

Recommended or required readings

The notes are constituted by the report prepared by the students.
Recommanded readings are suggested to the students in order to prepare the presentation of the subject of their conference.
Des ouvrages d'écotoxicologie de base sont également à disposition des étudiants comme par exemple:
Principles of Ecotoxicology, Walker et al.,
- Mechanistic toxicology, Boelsterli,
- Précis d'Ecotoxicologie, Ramade.

Assessment methods and criteria

Students will prepare a dossier concerning a case study relevant to the pollution of aquatic ecosystems by toxic pollutants and in relation to either their master thesis or any other topic they have a personal interest in. They will present the case study they have chosen (15 minutes of presentation) and will answer their colleagues questions. The assessment of the presentation and answers provided to the questions is the final evaluation of the course.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

The time table of the course is a common decision between the students and the professors.
